List all access devices
Count the physical keys, cards and known digital keys. For each item, record what is being handed over and which functions were checked: doors, starting and luggage compartment, according to the equipment. If a key remains with another driver or was lost previously, raise that before the handover.
Do not rely only on a photo of a key ring. Two items that look identical may perform different functions. A list helps the new owner understand the backup they received and which details still need checking.
Example: changing owners of a Volvo XC60 2024
The Canadian XC60 2024 manual, updated in March 2026, describes ending the previous owner’s association by removing the vehicle from the Volvo Cars app or contacting a retailer. The process triggers an automatic reset that removes profiles, user data and personal settings.
To register an owner when none is associated, the manual specifies that two keys must be inside the vehicle. Read the setup process before the handover and make sure the required access devices are available. If anything is missing, contact the manufacturer’s support team.
Example: reviewing digital keys in a BMW
BMW in the United States publishes different deletion instructions for Operating Systems 7, 8, 8.5 and 9. A deleted digital key is removed from the list of active keys, and the manufacturer says it cannot be restored. Before acting, confirm that you have selected the correct vehicle and key and have a working way to access the vehicle.
Review the list for your vehicle’s system, including keys you have shared. Handing over a physical key does not document that a key on another phone has been deleted. Account management and personal data also require the appropriate BMW process.
A system reset and ending a service link can be separate tasks
On the Israeli XC60 2017 page, Volvo describes resetting user data and settings, and separately directs users to ownership-change guidance for a vehicle with Volvo On Call. This illustrates why deleting data in the vehicle may not complete every step for the connected service.
Read the instructions for your model, year and system. The next owner should set up their own account; there is no need to give them your personal password. Before resetting, save any personal information you need outside the vehicle, and afterward check that the old profile is no longer displayed.
Test the keys together during handover
While the vehicle and access devices are available, test each key being handed over for the relevant functions. Make sure the new owner knows which key or card was used in each check and where to find the manufacturer’s digital-access setup instructions. Record any action that is still incomplete.
If a physical key is missing or a backup is needed, contact Key Replacement to check suitability and cost. If a key was lost previously, ask separately what can be done about its old recognition. Preparing an additional key and resetting an account are different services.
