Duplication starts with a working key
Explain whether the existing key opens the door, starts the car and operates remote buttons. These functions can differ, so a key that appears usable should not automatically be treated as a full working reference.
If every working key is lost, tell us before requesting a duplicate. The enquiry changes to checking replacement without an existing key. If a spare is with another driver, say whether it can be brought to the vehicle.
No working key remains? Read about replacement.Blade, transponder, remote and smart access
A key blade fits mechanical locks. A transponder or smart key can provide starting recognition, while remote buttons operate other functions. Not every key needs the same operations, and the outer case does not establish compatibility.
Define whether your backup needs door access only, starting as well, or the remote and proximity functions that exist in the car. The agreed quote should describe those functions rather than just say duplicate key.
Understand the different types of car keyAn additional smart key
Mention push-button starting and whether the car unlocks from a handle while the key is nearby. Smart access and starting functions are assessed against the vehicle system, year and equipment.
Ask whether a mechanical backup blade is included and which keys need to be present for preparation and testing. A key left at home should be mentioned even if it is not the one used daily.
Questions before ordering a smart car keyA key bought online or from another supplier
If you have already purchased a remote or key, provide its details and say whether it is new or used. A similar logo, shell or number of buttons does not guarantee that it can be adapted to your car.
Check suitability before booking arrival or buying another part. Discuss which parts and work would be covered by the quote and how responsibility for a separately supplied part will be handled.
What to check before buying a car key onlinePrice, booking and replacement-key warranty
The cost depends on the car, key type and agreed functions. Ask whether cutting, starting recognition, remote operations, arrival and final testing are included. A mechanical-only backup is not the same quote as a complete smart key.
Replacement keys have a three-month warranty. Ask what it covers and any conditions before the work. Availability and the possibility of completing the job at the car are checked during coordination.
Compare the scope of spare-key quotesTest the spare and store it separately
Test the agreed functions with the vehicle before relying on the new key. Where relevant, check the original key as well. Ask about any separate driver-profile pairing rather than assuming successful starting covers every preference setting.
Keep the spare somewhere separate from the everyday key and accessible when needed. Tell another driver what it is intended to do. A backup kept inside the locked vehicle may not help during a lockout.
