A blade, transponder and remote have different jobs
The blade enters the lock. A transponder, where fitted, helps the vehicle recognize the key for starting. A remote operates functions such as locking and unlocking. A key with an ordinary-looking blade may contain a transponder, so cutting a mechanical copy may be only part of making a working ignition key.
Describe the result you need: a key for door access only, one that starts the vehicle, or a complete key with remote functions. Compatibility is checked against the vehicle.
How the main key types compare
This comparison helps with an initial description. It is not a vehicle compatibility chart; every model does not support every type.
| Type | How to describe it | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical blade | The part that enters the lock | Whether starting compatibility is also needed |
| Transponder key | Starts with a key turn; the chip may be hidden | Starting recognition as well as blade cutting |
| Remote or flip key | Buttons with a fixed or folding blade | Remote, blade and transponder functions for the vehicle |
| Smart key | Keyless entry or starting system | Proximity functions and any backup blade |
| Key card | A card instead of a conventional fob | Exact model and how the card is used |
A flip blade does not identify the ignition system
A flip key describes a folding blade mechanism. It does not identify its transponder, compatible remote or suitability for another vehicle. Even an identical number of buttons does not prove compatibility.
A broken shell around a working key calls for checking the shell and existing parts. With no working key, the question is making a replacement. Distinguish those situations before buying a part.
Broken shell or loose blade? Read about key shell replacementA smart fob and a phone key are different products
A physical smart key is different from a digital key on a phone. Phone access depends on vehicle support, equipment and manufacturer services. Push-button starting alone does not mean any phone can become a key.
Specify whether your backup should be another physical key or an available digital option. Follow the manufacturer for digital services; check physical key compatibility against the vehicle.
What to include in your enquiry
Send the make, model, year and a key photo if available. Say whether another key both unlocks and starts the car, and which buttons you need. Without a photo, explain how you currently unlock and start it.
Agree on the key supplied and the functions tested after preparation. That makes the quote relevant to your needs rather than a similar-looking shell.
