Remote programming and ignition recognition differ
Remote buttons, the starting transponder and the mechanical blade have different roles. A working remote does not prove that a key can start the vehicle; a blade that unlocks a door does not prove that its buttons are compatible.
Say whether you need another remote only, a complete key or work on your current fob. If the car has stopped responding, describe what happened before the fault rather than choosing the repair in advance.
Before buying a remote
The model and year matter more than appearance. Send any part marking with a photo and vehicle details. Button count is only one clue; identical-looking fobs can be intended for different systems.
Check a separately purchased remote before arranging a visit. Mention if it is used. Suitability depends on the particular part and vehicle.
Checks before buying a car key or remote onlineDescribe the response to each function
Do all buttons fail, just one, or does the remote work intermittently? Does another key lock and unlock? Does the affected key still start the car? These differences help establish where the enquiry begins.
Mention battery replacement, a drop or water exposure. One response alone does not prove that programming has been lost. A battery, shell, remote or vehicle-system check may be appropriate.
Only the driver door unlocks
Describe what happens on the next press and the vehicle unlock setting. One door responding is different from every button becoming unresponsive.
Distinguish remote-button unlocking, passive handle entry and mechanical blade access. The focused guide uses owner-manual examples to help describe this behaviour before requesting a new remote.
Only the driver door unlocks: setting or fault? The doors unlock but the tailgate does not respond
Specify whether the missing function is unlocking, powered opening or response to one button. A tailgate remaining down does not alone show whether an unlock command was received, particularly with manual and powered versions.
Say whether the vehicle-mounted button also fails, whether the key is near the rear and whether there is a message or sound. Check operation and settings in the manual for the correct year and equipment.
Tailgate not opening: details to provideA flip key with worn buttons
The shell or folding mechanism can wear while internal parts still work. Explain whether the blade opens and locks in place, buttons press normally or any parts have separated.
Keep the parts and make the vehicle available if needed. Moving existing components into another shell does not necessarily create a separate spare key.
Checks when the remote is ready
Test the agreed locking, unlocking and tailgate functions beside the car, where supported and included. Check starting and keyless entry separately if the key also provides them.
Ask what was made or repaired, who to contact if a function fails and what the warranty covers. Keep this information for any later enquiry.
