What do you mean by a smart key?
Explain whether you unlock with remote buttons, by touching the door handle while carrying the key, or both. Say whether the car has a start button. This defines the replacement and the functions to check afterwards.
Keys from the same manufacturer do not necessarily offer the same functions. Model year and vehicle version can matter. Check compatibility before ordering, rather than relying on the logo or button count.
Making a spare when a working key is available
With a working key available, start by asking about an additional key. Confirm which existing keys must be with the vehicle during the work. A key left at home and never tested may not be a reliable backup.
Ask whether a mechanical backup blade is included and which remote and proximity functions are covered. Test the agreed functions on the new key and, where required, the existing keys.
Checks after having a car key madeWhen all smart keys have been lost
With no working key, ask about replacement for an all-keys-lost situation. State whether the car is locked, where it is and whether it can be accessed. The model and key system determine whether the work can be carried out at that location.
If one key was lost and another remains, also ask how the lost key is addressed. Starting recognition and mechanical locking are separate matters; understand what each proposed action covers.
Questions to ask about a lost or stolen keyA backup blade and a fob battery solve different problems
Some smart keys contain a mechanical blade for use according to the manufacturer instructions. It does not replace every electronic function. Learn whether your key has one, whether it fits the lock and how your specific vehicle uses it.
A low-key-battery warning calls for checking the battery specified for that fob. It does not prove that the whole key needs replacement. For a different recognition message, provide the exact wording before deciding what is needed.
Digital access does not make every phone a spare key
Phone-key services depend on the manufacturer, model, equipment and device. Even where supported, find out how you can use the car without access to your phone or account. Set up and share the service using manufacturer instructions.
For another physical smart key, send the vehicle details and required functions. We can check what can be made, what is included and what needs to be available during the work.
