Three functions to check separately
Recognition for unlocking or starting, loading a driver profile and recalling a seat position can each be checked separately. If the vehicle starts with the key but loads a guest profile, report both facts. This helps describe a settings issue accurately rather than suggesting there is no working key.
Also check whether the vehicle has the relevant memory equipment. A power seat does not necessarily have memory, and memory buttons do not prove that every setting is automatically stored for each key.
Example: key memory in the Volvo V60 2018
The Canadian V60 2018 manual describes storing the mirror and power-seat positions, where equipped, when locking with the key. Unlocking with that same key and opening the driver’s door within two minutes allows the stored position to return. The feature can be enabled or disabled in the menu.
The manual also explains that there will be no visible movement if the position has not changed. “The seat did not move” is therefore not enough to identify a failure. Check whether the seat is in the expected position and whether the operating conditions were met.
Example: BMW ID in Operating System 8.5
BMW’s US instructions for Operating System 8.5 explain that a physical or digital key can be linked to a BMW ID so the vehicle recognizes the user and loads that identity. When the identity does not load automatically, the manufacturer directs users to check the link through the automatic recognition settings.
This concerns a user association in that specific system. It does not establish that preparing another key automatically copies every user detail, or that the same menus exist in other BMW systems.
Example: Porsche profiles and memory buttons
Porsche’s UK guidance covers the Cayenne Electric from model year 2026. Loading a profile through the key requires an active Porsche ID and a profile created in the vehicle. The key is associated with the last profile used with it. Separately, the appropriate Memory Package allows positions to be stored and recalled using memory buttons.
If a driver switched profiles while using the same key, check which profile was retained for the next use. Distinguish the preferences held in a profile from a position stored on a button; the guidance describes these as separate ways to use the system.
After adding a key or changing users
With the vehicle parked, first check unlocking and starting, then profile recognition and the memory function according to the manual. Use the key intended for that driver and note whether other keys were also available during the check. Record the profile name and the function that did not return.
If only the personal settings are affected, ask vehicle support about the profile association. If unlocking or starting also fails, tell Key Replacement about that difference and provide the vehicle details so we can check whether the service is suitable.
