What are interference and shielding?
The Israeli XC60 Twin Engine 2018 manual says electromagnetic fields and shielding may disrupt keyless starting and unlocking. These affect communication between the key and vehicle. They do not, by themselves, establish that the key’s registration has been erased from the system.
When describing the problem, say whether the buttons still work while the handle or starting function fails to recognize the key. That distinction is more useful than calling the remote “weak,” because different functions may have different recognition conditions.
A simple comparison: separate the key from nearby items
In the same manual, Volvo recommends keeping the key away from metal objects and equipment such as phones, computers and chargers, with a recommended minimum separation of 10–15 centimeters. Take the key out of the bag or shared pocket and try the same normal action again beside the vehicle.
If the response improves, note which object or case had been next to it. That is a useful clue, rather than a confirmed diagnosis. This comparison does not require taking the key apart or changing settings.
A particular location can be part of the pattern
The Renault Arkana English manual for 19 November 2025–5 June 2026 lists equipment operating on a similar frequency and surroundings with strong electromagnetic radiation among the causes of an unresponsive card. The Clio 5 manual starting on 17 March 2026 also describes nearby installations affecting the card.
Note whether the problem has occurred only in one parking area or also at other places you have already visited. You do not need to move a vehicle that cannot currently be used to test this. Report the pattern of events that has already occurred.
A battery warning still needs attention
In the Clio 5 manual reviewed here, the message Keycard Battery Low directs the user to replace the card battery according to the instructions. Report that message even if the problem seems tied to one location. An improvement after separating the phone does not measure battery condition.
If the battery has already been replaced, give its type, the replacement date and what changed afterward. Also mention any drop or exposure to water. Several causes may need checking, so intermittent operation alone is not a reason to choose reprogramming.
Battery selection and replacement for your particular keyCompare one action and keep a short record
With the vehicle parked, compare the same unlocking action with the key in your hand, then with another key if you have one. Changing the location, key and unlocking method together makes it harder to identify what affected the result. Record what worked, what failed and any message that appeared.
If the lack of response continues, send Key Replacement the vehicle and key details and your results. During the call, we can check whether a key inspection, battery check or another investigation is appropriate, along with mobile service availability. For alternative operating instructions, consult the exact vehicle manual.
