Check whether Keyless Access is fitted
Volkswagen’s official US MY2021 Golf TSI/Golf GTI quick-start guide describes Keyless Access as optional. It notes that the system also operates with the rear hatch. The Golf name alone therefore does not establish that this function is fitted.
Say whether you unlock using remote buttons, the handle or both. Handle access that fails while the buttons work is a useful detail for the enquiry.
Smart key access functionsDriver-door-only unlocking and settings
The US 2021 guide lists unlocking settings for all doors, one door or one side of the vehicle. Single-door unlocking may therefore relate to a setting. Check which options exist in your Golf’s manual rather than copying menus from another version.
If a new key behaves differently from the old one, identify the exact difference and operation. Before duplication, explain whether existing access functions and tailgate unlocking are important, according to the fitted equipment.
A remote battery and a spare are different needs
Replacing a battery addresses an existing key; it does not add a backup for another driver. If range has shortened, say when it began and whether the second key behaves the same way. For a fault after replacement, explain the work done before assuming you need a new key.
Find battery specifications and care instructions in the appropriate vehicle manual. Volkswagen’s UK portal requests a VIN to locate it. An identical appearance or “Golf key” description does not approve compatibility.
A Golf spare or loss of all keys
With a working key, request an additional key and specify which functions will be tested with the car. Prepare all keys you hold for checks as agreed. The previous key should be tested too, rather than only the new one.
Without an available key, say whether all were lost or a working key is inside the locked car. Add whether the car is open but will not start and whether a dashboard message appears. This separates an access enquiry, a fault check and replacement-key preparation.

Agree which functions the replacement includes and test them at completion. The three-month warranty applies to replacement keys only. The US TSI/GTI 2021 example does not determine the equipment on your Golf.
